PM Modi speaks to Iran President; stresses on freedom of navigation, ensuring shipping lanes open

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed Id and Nowruz greetings to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday, March 21, 2026, expressing hope that this festive season will bring peace, stability and prosperity to West Asia.
In his phone call with the Iranian leader, Prime Minister Modi condemned attacks on critical infrastructures in the region that threaten regional stability and disrupt global supply chains, and reiterated the importance of protecting freedom of navigation and ensuring shipping lanes remain open and safe.
“We spoke with President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian and conveyed Eid al-Adha and Nowruz congratulations. We expressed our hope that this festive season will bring peace, stability and prosperity to West Asia,” the Prime Minister said. he said. X.

The Prime Minister also appreciated Iran’s support to the safety and security of Indian citizens in Iran.

On March 12, President Pezeshkian briefed Prime Minister Modi about the current situation in Iran and shared his perspective on the latest developments in the region.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Prime Minister expressed deep concern about the evolving security situation in the region and reiterated India’s consistent position that all issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

The United States and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, prompting retaliation from Iran targeting its neighbors and Israel.
Iran also controls the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route through which 20 percent of the world’s energy is transported. Since the conflict, Iran has allowed very few ships to pass through this area.
Prime Minister Modi has also met many world leaders since the start of the conflict. These include leaders from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, France and Malaysia.
