Shock new entry in Britons’ top ten takeaways – as fish and chips flounders and doners are done for

There was once a toss-up between fish, chips and kebabs for takeaway.

But with the rise of fried chicken in Korea, thanks to popular Kpop music and Netflix thriller Squid Game, you can afford to go a lot more exotic.

It is one of a wide variety of foods that is now in Britain’s top ten favorite takeaways, with Thai cuisine also on that list.

But Just Eat’s analysis reveals that staples of the past such as doner kebab, chicken korma and fish and chips are having to be replaced.

The food delivery company says social media and healthy living trends play a big role in customers’ orders today.

Just Eat, which started 20 years ago with seven cuisines on its website including Italian, Indian, Chinese and fish and chips, now offers more than 100 options, with new additions including Bangladeshi, Brazilian and Nepalese.

Fish and chips, a firm favorite of 2006, has fallen out of the top ten and has been replaced by items such as Korean fried chicken, loaded fries and pad thai.

TikTok’s influence has also led to increased demand for Japanese-inspired matcha products, with orders on Just Eat more than doubling last year.

Dubai chocolate, another social media favorite, is also in high demand, with related products up a whopping 2,684 percent last year.

Leigh Phillipson, Just Eat’s commercial director, said the site had seen platforms such as TikTok ‘have a real impact on the popularity of orders, with Korea experiencing a boom in the last few years thanks to shows like Squid Game and the music of Blackpink’.

He added: ‘Products such as matcha and fiber drinks, which would have confused most Brits in 2006, are falling in line with healthy living trends.’

Just Eat said it first introduced Thai food on its platform in 2008, while Korean food was added only a decade ago. However, according to the data, some classic dishes still remain popular; The group confirms it still has more than 11,000 independent Indian restaurants on its books.

‘Although there is more choice, Indian, Chinese and British favorites such as fish and chips are as popular as ever,’ Mr Phillipson said.
