For news out of the Middle East, look beyond our US-centric media

Three weeks into the world-changing war against Iran, and the global US and UK news production pipeline on which Australia’s legacy media is embedded is no longer fit for purpose – at least not for Australia’s purposes.

We’re missing or under-showing important stories and not getting the diverse and nuanced perspectives that Australian communities need. Our news is distorted by being out of sync with the daily talking points in Washington and London, and by being obsessed with one big story, driven by the political press: What does Trump think of Albanese, among other things?

Australia’s obsession with Trump stems, in part, from an instinctive desire to be part of that great global moment when the celebrity culture of tabloid showbiz collides with the chin-stroking gravitas of Washington’s more globally relevant policies.
