Ram Navami 2026 recipes: From sooji halwa to kheer, check these traditional dishes for bhog and kanya pujan

Ram Navami, which celebrates the birth of Lord Shri Ram, is celebrated with great devotion and spiritual fervor in India. On this auspicious day, devotees prepare various sattvic dishes as bhog or holy offering to the deity.

These traditional recipes have deep spiritual significance and are made using simple, pure ingredients, with no onions or garlic, in accordance with the principles of purity and devotion. Preparing and serving these dishes is considered an important part of the celebration, symbolizing belief in and respect for the divine.

On this occasion, many devotees also perform the ritual of feeding nine young girls a special ‘vrat’ meal known as ‘kanjak’ or ‘kanya puja’. Navami menu usually includes dishes like poori, kala chana and sooji ka halwa. Let’s examine some of the most popular preparations:

Aloo Tamatar Curry
A simple and comforting dish where potatoes are cooked in a tangy tomato-based sauce with minimal spices. Easy to prepare, it is a widely used recipe on fasting days and pairs well with vrat ki roti, paratha or poori.

Singhara Poori
This puffed bread is made using potato and water chestnut flour. It is best consumed with vrat ka kadhi, khatta-meetha kaddu, pumpkin sabzi or aloo-palak sabzi.
Sooji Halva
Semolina is roasted in rich cow ghee until golden brown and then cooked in sugar syrup flavored with cardamom and dry fruits. Served with hot puris, this dish is usually offered before offering to Lord Rama during Kanya Pujan.
Kala Chana
Chickpeas that are soaked overnight and boiled are turned into a perfect sattvic dish by tempering them with cumin, green chillies, coriander powder and amchur (dry mango powder) without using onion or garlic.

Kheer
A sweet and creamy dessert made by sautéing rice, milk, sugar and dried fruits in oil. This traditional pudding is an indispensable treat on festive occasions.

Puran Poli
A delicious flatbread filled with a mixture of chana dal and jaggery, offering a perfect balance between sweetness and richness, usually prepared during festive celebrations.
