A CEO died and his 14-year-old son was injured when his boat was hit by another ship that fled the scene in South Florida.
At approximately 8:11 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, first responders were dispatched to Biscayne Bay to a small vessel involved in a hit-and-run, NBC reported. WTVJ, WPLG And CBS affiliate WFOR reported.
Father and son were in a seven-foot boat on the Meloy Canal near Indian Creek and Biscayne Pointe when another boat hit them and they were thrown into the water. The two injured people were rescued by rescue teams and transferred to a nearby hospital.
According to reports, Davide Veglia, the 55-year-old founder of ABTS Congress Services, died due to his injuries. As of Thursday, March 26, her 14-year-old son remained in the hospital with a broken arm, WTVJ reported.
That evening, two young people doing landscaping nearby heard the accident. They called 911 after hearing the child’s scream for help, according to the report.
” ‘Help, help, help!’ “He said it three times and the third time he was silent,” Samuel Londoño told WTVJ. “And right after that, silence fell. We couldn’t hear anything else, and right after that came a super fast boat.”
The other boat that left the scene was described by authorities as a dark blue boat with black bottom paint. According to reports, the ship is approximately 20 to 30 feet long and potentially has four outboard engines. He was last seen heading north through the Meloy Channel in the bay between 19:45 and 20:15 on Wednesday evening.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
Veglia is remembered by his loved ones after the fatal accident.
