‘Texas Killing Fields’ suspect indicted and arrested 40 years after murders

More than 40 years after two women were found dead along a Lone Star State highway where nearly 30 bodies were found over the years, a suspect has been charged in the decades-old “Texas Killing Fields” unsolved case.
James Dolphs Elmore Jr., 61, is charged with tampering with evidence and involuntary manslaughter in the death of Laura Miller, as well as tampering with evidence in the murder of Audrey Cook. accordingly FOX 26.
The charges stem from the infamous “Texas Killing Fields” murders, in which the bodies of 30 women, including Audrey Cook, Laura Miller, Donna Prudhomme and Heidi Fye-Villareal, were found between 1984 and 1991 at the intersection of Calder Road and Ervin Street in League City.

Texas authorities have been trying to solve the case of those responsible for the murders for several years.
He pleaded guilty to murder in the 2022 deaths of William Reece, Laura Smither, Kelli Cox and Jessica Cain, FOX 26 reported.
Over the last 40 years, authorities have pointed to Clyde Hedrick as the prime suspect in the murders of several women at Calder Road Field.

Hedrick was reportedly convicted of mistreatment of a corpse in connection with the death of Ellen Beason in 1986.
Beason disappeared around the same time as Fye-Villareal and Miller, leading authorities to believe the disappearances were linked.
In 2013, authorities reopened the investigation and Hedrick was charged in Beason’s death.

He was convicted of manslaughter a year later and sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison, but was released on parole after only eight years behind bars, FOX 26 reported.
But in 2024, the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office began re-examining the case as part of a renewed effort to get justice for the nearly 30 women found dead in the infamous “Texas Killing Fields.”

The investigation led authorities to seek a grand jury indictment against Hedrick for the deaths of Cook, Fye-Villareal, Miller, and Prudhomme, as well as additional indictments against Elmore for alleged crimes stemming from the deaths of Miller and Cook.

Although Hedrick died before the charges were presented to the grand jury, the indictment still appeared to maintain transparency and provide closure for the victims’ families.

Shortly thereafter, Elmore was indicted for his alleged role in the deaths of both Miller and Cook, FOX 26 reported.

Elmore was later taken into custody and his bail request was denied Tuesday evening.

The arrest was made with the assistance of multiple agencies, including the League City Police Department, Hitchcock Police Department, Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI.
