Quadruple amputee cornhole pro says he fatally shot person in self-defense | Maryland

A quadruple amputee professional corner player was acting in self-defense when he shot and killed a passenger in his Tesla during a heated argument, his lawyer said.
Dayton Webber, 27, appeared in Charles County district court via video conference for a bail review on Wednesday. Bradrick Michael Wells, 27, left Maryland after the March 22 shooting, Judge Patrick Devine said. Devine ordered Webber to remain in jail without bail.
Webber, who was extradited from Virginia and charged with murder, has not yet entered a plea and is expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on May 6. He also faces assault and firearms charges.
Defense attorney Andrew Jezic told the court Webber acted in self-defense and was looking forward to a “lengthy trial” to prove that.
After the hearing, Jezic told reporters that his client was “horrified” when Wells was killed.
“The truth here is [Webber] “Had Jezic not taken immediate action to defend his life, he would have been a murder victim,” he said.
Webber’s family members declined to comment after the hearing.
Webber, who had his arms and legs amputated at 10 months old to save his life after contracting a serious blood infection, is accused of shooting Wells, of Waldorf, Maryland, twice in the head during an argument, according to police charging documents.
Assistant state attorney Karen Piper Mitchell said witnesses in the car told authorities that the argument was about a gun a friend of Wells’ had stolen from Webber, and that Webber was upset that Wells was still friends with the thief.
He said Webber and Wells had a history of arguments, including a 2024 incident when Webber ordered Wells to leave his home. As Wells was leaving, Mitchell said Webber fired from a second-story window. Jezic said Webber fired into the air.
Arguing that Webber should remain in custody, Mitchell stated that he went to Virginia after the shooting and had firearms.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed whether the onboard cameras captured what was happening or whether the Tesla’s autonomous driving function was being used when the attack occurred.
According to charging documents, Webber pulled over after the shooting in La Plata, Maryland, and asked two backseat passengers to help get the victim out. But they refused, got out of the car and flagged down officers, according to documents.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office said Webber fled with the victim still in the car. Two hours later, a Charlotte Hall resident about 10 miles (16 kilometers) away found Wells’ body in a roadside yard and notified officers.
Detectives tracked Webber’s car in Charlottesville, Virginia, and found Webber at a hospital “where he was seeking treatment for a medical issue,” the sheriff’s office said.
