A British woman was strangled in the UK – why did the US military try her case? – podcast | US military

A little-known system by which US military personnel are court-martialed for crimes allegedly committed in the UK is under increasing scrutiny. One of the people who went through this system is academic Sarah Steele.

Steele told Guardian investigative reporter Harry Davies that his case was being handled by the US military justice system after he was strangled one night by US fighter pilot Jacob Wulfson, who was living in a flat in Cambridge. The jurors at his trial were all men from the air force. “It was really difficult to sit in a room full of people in uniform, mostly older men, and have individuals who didn’t have a life experience similar to mine; they were culturally different,” he said.

Davies tells Annie Kelly It is explained how this parallel justice system differs from the English courts and what other crimes committed in the UK are prosecuted under this system.
