Wild outback police chase with baby inside car, 180km/hr speeds

A seven-month-old baby was a passenger in a terrifying 160km police chase in remote NSW, police say.

The dramatic chase began around 10pm on Saturday night on Menindee Street in Broken Hill, when officers conducting a roadside breath test directed a sedan to stop.

Police allege the 32-year-old driver behind the wheel ignored orders and headed towards Barrier Hwy, sparking an extensive pursuit in the state’s Far West.

The vehicle is claimed to be tearing through the darkness of the outback at speeds reaching 180 km/h, with a staggering 70 km/h over the limit.

There was a 34-year-old woman, a 14-year-old girl and a 7-month-old baby in the vehicle.

The high-speed chase finally ended after 100 miles when Wilcannia Police had to place spikes on the road.

The sedan gradually slowed to over 5km before coming to a complete stop.

However, police claimed that the driver then got out of the vehicle and fled into the pitch black bushes in the surrounding area.

A search was launched and a man was arrested a short time later, while the three passengers escaped unhurt.

The man was taken to Broken Hill Police Station and charged with three offenses including driving while disqualified, failing to stop during a police pursuit and dangerous driving.

He was also charged with failing to comply with the AVO.
