Iran proposal significant but not good enough: Trump

US President Donald Trump said Iran’s peace proposal was important but not good enough.

“They made an offer, and it’s an important offer. It’s an important step. It’s not good enough,” Trump told reporters during an Easter egg event for children on the White House lawn.

“If they do what they have to do, the war could end very quickly. They have to do some things. They know this, I think they are negotiating in good faith,” he said.

U.S. officials have been indirectly negotiating with Iran through Pakistan to reach a deal in which Iran would give up nuclear weapons and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the transit route for oil.

Iran has said it wants a permanent end to the war, not just a temporary ceasefire.

A regional official involved in the ceasefire talks said efforts were continuing.

“We are still talking to both sides,” he told the Associated Press, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the closed-door diplomacy.

A Pakistan-brokered framework to end the war emerged from intense contacts overnight and proposed an immediate ceasefire, followed by talks on a broader peace deal to be concluded within 15 to 20 days, a source familiar with the proposals told Reuters on Monday.

The source said Pakistani army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir was in contact “all night long” with US Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday that Iran’s demands “should not be interpreted as a sign of compromise, but as a reflection of its confidence in defending its position.”

He added that previous US demands, such as the 15-point plan, were rejected on the grounds that they were “excessive”.

Trump said Monday that the final team representing the Iranian government was not as “radicalized” as others killed in the airstrikes.

“We think they’re actually smarter,” he said.

Trump said that if it were up to him, the US would take control of Iranian oil, but the US public would not support such a move.

“Unfortunately, the American people want us to come home. If it were up to me, I would take the oil, I would keep the oil, I would make a lot of money, and I would also take better care of the Iranian people than they are being taken care of.”

New airstrikes were reported across the region on Monday, more than five weeks after the United States and Israel began striking Iran in a war that has killed thousands of people and damaged economies by driving up oil prices.

Iranian state media reported that the intelligence chief of the Revolutionary Guard, Majid Khademi, died.

On Monday, Israel claimed responsibility for his death.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened on Monday to destroy Iran’s infrastructure and hunt down its leaders “one by one.”

Iran said on Monday that two petrochemical complexes were attacked.

The National Petrochemical Company of Iran said its emergency and firefighting teams brought the fire at the South Pars complex in Asaluyeh under control.

There was no loss of life.

Tasnim news agency said the electricity supply to the complex was cut off after two companies providing electricity, water and oxygen to the complex were attacked.

Trump has repeatedly warned Iran that the US could expand its attacks to infrastructure such as power plants and bridges.

The attack on a petrochemical facility in southern Iran was part of dismantling the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s “money machine,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday.

Netanyahu said in his statement: “Iran is no longer the same Iran, and Israel is no longer the same Israel. Israel is stronger than ever and the terrorist regime in Iran is weaker than ever.” he said.
