DoT extends reassessment timeline for Vodafone Idea’s AGR dues till June — Here’s all we know
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) expects the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) reassessment for Vodafone Idea to be completed by June, PTI reported on April 7. The telecommunications company recently received government assistance for its dues and liabilities, and the reassessment was previously targeted to be completed by March 31.
Sources told the agency that the telecom department’s Spectrum Usage Charge (SUC) review is ongoing and accordingly the timeline has been extended to June. This step comes after a reassessment of the internal license fee by the Controller of Communications Accounts.
India gives relief to Vodafone Idea after SC verdict
Notably, the Union Cabinet granted relief to Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) regarding AGR dues following the Supreme Court order and ‘frozen’ its case for recovery of compensation. ₹87,695 crore for a period ranging from FY 2006-07 to FY 2018-19. According to the report, these ‘frozen’ dues are subject to re-evaluation.
This amount does not include the 2017-18 Financial Year and 2018-19 Financial Year AGR dues, which were finalized with the 2020 decision of the top court and must be paid accordingly.
Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha in early February this year, Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar had said that VIL’s AGR dues, which have been frozen as of December 31, 2025, will also be subject to re-evaluation by the DoT in line with the deduction verification guidelines.
A committee constituted by DoT on January 30, 2026 will decide the outcome of such re-evaluation by the telecom department.
“The committee consists of a retired Secretary level officer of the Government of India and a representative of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India nominated by the CAG. The committee will finalize the outcome of the reassessment within a period of two months unless extended,” Sekhar said in his response, adding that the committee’s decision will be final and binding on both parties (DoT and VIL).
Telecommunication companies owe money to the government ₹1.77 lakh crore in AGR dues by FY25.
Total AGR dues of telecom operators to be paid to the government till FY 24-25 remained above 2020 ₹1.77 lakh crore, according to official data shared with Parliament.
The data shows that debt-ridden Vi’s total liability is: ₹89,952 crore, Bharti Group ₹51,091 crore, Tata Group ₹20,426 crore, MTNL ₹14,462 crore and Reliance Jio Infocomm ₹1,984 crore.
