Jean Smart’s Deborah Vance returns for final episodes on Stan

The always gorgeous Jean Smart perfectly embodied the character of Las Vegas veteran stand-up Deborah Vance for four seasons. hacksI’m starting to think of him as Vance rather than Smart. But now the final season is here, and the Vance character is about to come to an end, along with the best TV portrayal of co-dependent friendship.

This fifth season picks up shortly after the fallout at the end of season four, when Deborah sensationally quits her dream job as a late-night TV presenter and heads to Singapore, which means she can perform with a gap despite an 18-month “non-compete” clause. This led to him and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) falling out again and reconciling after TMZ incorrectly reported Deborah’s death.

Determined to make sure her legacy won’t be the legacy of her last show experience, Deborah and Ava head back to Vegas (where they’re greeted at the gate of her property by a shrine dedicated to Deborah, whose appearance shocks die-hard fans, the “little Debbies”), with plans for a post-prank comeback. Yes, in a way, this season is treading old ground, but fans of the multiple Emmy Award-winning series won’t be disappointed.

As the final episodes move towards the lifting of Deborah’s gag order, there are more fabulous guest stars than ever before – we’re forbidden from revealing all of them – potential romances for Ava and Deborah, and the usual ratio of blink-and-you’ll-miss-them highlights. Behind many jokes and brutal distortions of the entertainment industry linger more serious motifs such as gender inequality, family relationships, ageism, generational divides, and redemption.

The comeback show’s side stories include Deborah rushing to win an Oscar and Grammy and “EGOT” (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winner); A wedding that ended in an FBI raid; Marcus (Carl Clemons-Hopkins) opens his own place in Vegas; and a scathing episode about artificial intelligence in which a sketchy venture capitalist offers Deborah exorbitant amounts of money for her back catalog so that other comedians can “optimize the creative process.” Eventually, even Deborah realizes that this is a ridiculous deal and asks the astonished billionaire: “Is art art if there is no humanity behind it?”

The creators of the series make another examination of artificial intelligence in the later episodes of the series; It also includes “digital resurrection” technology, which uses artificial intelligence to recreate and use dead actors’ voices, as real Hollywood already does.

hacks It’s always been a delightful mix of goofy physical comedy and absurdity with cultural satire, and that mix has been amped up a notch for the final season. But there are still poignant moments, especially towards the final dramatic plot twist that the show’s creators always had in mind and which we certainly can’t spoil.

But we can say that some things have come full circle in a meta sense; Ava, now 30, is finally selling one of her screenplays; Deborah and her daughter DJ are in a good place (albeit still dysfunctional), and Jimmy (co-creator and showrunner Paul W. Downs) and Kayla (Megan Stalter) are happily running their agency together.

And even until the final episode, the mentor-mentee relationship between Ava and Deborah remains deeply flawed. “I’ve always wondered,” Ava says to Deborah, who is shamelessly vying for media attention at another celebrity residency opening, “what Machiavelli would have been like if Boomer had been distorted by misogyny.”

Best match since then Odd Couple He will be seriously missed.
