Nicole Kidman plans to become a death doula after mother’s lonely death

Nicole Kidman is embarking on a brand new career path.

On Saturday, the “Babygirl” actress spoke with investigative journalist and University of San Francisco alumnus Vicky Nguyen as part of the private school’s Silk Speaker Series and opened up about her plans to become a death doula nearly two years after her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, died at 84.

Admitting that the idea “might sound a little weird,” Kidman told the crowd, “My mom was alone when she passed, and that’s all family could provide.” San Francisco Chronicleto. “My sister and I have so many kids between us and we have careers and jobs and we wanted to take care of my dad because he wasn’t in the world anymore, and that’s when I said, ‘I wish there were these people in the world who could sit neutrally and just provide comfort and care.'”

Kidman, who was awarded the best actress award for her role in the movie “Babygirl” at the Venice Film Festival in September 2024, but had to miss the ceremony to be with her family, shared the news of her mother’s death in a statement made by the director of the film, Halina Reijn.

A representative for Kidman confirmed the death at the time, telling Fox News Digital: “The family is heartbroken and requests privacy at this time.”

Throughout the years, Kidman has openly expressed her close bond with her mother and shared her views on her mother’s health issues.

During an interview with NPR’s Clean Air Kidman said in the podcast, which aired in 2022: “I’m at the place where I’m given the chance to see the world because we’re so close. My mom gives me the chance to see the world through the eyes of an 81-year-old woman. It’s so helpful right now, because she’s so conscious. She has all her brain abilities, so she hasn’t lost anything. She hasn’t lost any of her memories, which is fascinating and extremely intelligent.”

“It gives me access because it’s also very direct and very honest, and I get to access the world through her eyes, through my mother’s eyes, so it’s a part of me at almost 80 years old,” she continued. “Of course it’s his perspective. There’s a lot of different perspectives over 80 years, but it’s his perspective and his particular way, but I’m soaking it up and learning it.”

“My mother didn’t necessarily get the career she wanted, but she was determined that her daughters had equal opportunities,” Kidman added. “This gave me my life. He gave me my life, him and my father.”

Kidman’s father, Antony Kidman, died in 2014.
