Announcing his move, Maliwal said his decision was out of conviction rather than coercion, while launching a scathing personal and political attack on AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal.
“I joined the BJP not under any pressure, but because I believe in Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. I urge everyone who wants to do constructive politics to join the BJP,” he said.
Maliwal, who has been in a relationship with Kejriwal since 2006 and is a prominent figure of the anti-corruption movement, alleged that he was subjected to intimidation and violence within the party.
“I left AAP and joined BJP. I have been working with Arvind Kejriwal since 2006 and supported him during every agitation. But Arvind Kejriwal beat me up in my own house by a goon. When I raised my voice against this, I was threatened and he put a lot of pressure on me to withdraw the FIR I lodged in this incident. I was denied the opportunity to speak in Parliament by the party for two years, which is very shameful. Stepping up his attack, Maliwal accused the AAP leadership of misgovernance, central control and corruption in Punjab.
“Now they have entered Punjab and the state government is being remotely controlled and turning Punjab into its personal ATM. Sand mining and drug abuse are at its peak in Punjab… FIRs have been registered against all the leaders who have raised their voices against them. Arvind Kejriwal is known for corruption and ‘gundagardi’,” he added.
Contrasting with the BJP leadership, Maliwal praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, citing key policy decisions and national security actions.
“On the other hand, we have Prime Minister Modi, the most popular leader in the world. Be it during Operation Sindoor, when we killed enemies by entering their homes and ended Naxalism in the country, or when we introduced the women’s reservation bill in Parliament, Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have taken historic decisions for the development of the nation,” he said.
