POLL: Should the King cancel the US state visit after Trump shooting? | Royal | News

In the incident that took place at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, it was seen that the US President, who had previously been the target of the assassination attempt, was quickly evacuated by Secret Service agents along with other senior members of the administration. The king’s visit comes at a turbulent time for the US President, with Trump facing calls to postpone the monarch’s trip over his war against Iran, even before the attempted attack was carried out.
So what do you think? Should the King and Queen cancel their state visit across the pond? Vote in our poll and comment in the comment section below.
The suspect, who was said to be carrying a shotgun and handgun on Saturday, was identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California.
It is understood he was a guest at the Washington Hilton hotel where the event was held and faces charges including assaulting a police officer with a dangerous weapon, but acting attorney general Todd Blanche said additional charges would be filed.
Mr. Trump posted photos on his Truth Social platform of the attacker being handcuffed to the ground after his arrest and promised to reschedule the disrupted event.
He said: “My impression is that it’s a lone wolf thing. These are crazy people.”
At the time of writing, it is not yet clear whether there will be any changes to the King’s state visit.
The Prime Minister’s Chief Secretary, Darren Jones, told Trevor Phillips on Sky News on Sunday Morning: “These are remarkable scenes. This morning the Prime Minister sent a message in solidarity to the US president regarding the events that have occurred.”
“As you can imagine, with His Majesty the King’s visit this week, our teams are working closely to ensure security arrangements are appropriately met.”
Asked if there were extra concerns for the King’s safety during his upcoming visit to the US, Mr Jones said: “As you can imagine, the Government and the Palace take His Majesty’s security very seriously and extensive discussions have already been taking place, which will continue over the coming days.”
