India is vital to global AI; AGI requires further breakthroughs, says Google’s chief scientist

In line with the global rise in artificial intelligence, Google has steadily scaled its India operations over the last four years. It currently employs around 14,000 people across the country, of which around 5,000 are based in Bengaluru. According to public estimates, DeepMind has around 200 engineers in India. In February 2025, Google opened its new Bengaluru office, Ananta, which is expected to accommodate 20,000 people. A larger campus, which will be Google’s largest campus outside of its Mountain View headquarters, is expected to open in Hyderabad this year.
