UK Man Appears In Court Over Stabbing Of Two Jewish Men In London

LONDON, May 1 (Reuters) – A 45-year-old man appeared in a London court on Friday charged with attempted murder over an attack in Golders Green, north London, in which two Jewish men were stabbed in what police are treating as a terrorist incident.

Government officials subsequently increased the domestic terrorism threat to its second-highest level; This means that there is a high probability of a terrorist attack within the next six months.

Wednesday’s stabbings followed a series of incidents targeting Jewish facilities in the same area of north London that is home to a large Jewish population, prompting British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to vow stronger action to protect Jewish people.

Pro-Palestinian marches, which critics say encourage antisemitism, may now face new restrictions amid widespread calls for greater protection for Britain’s small Jewish community of around 290,000.

Next Court Appearance is May 15

On Friday, Essa Suleiman was charged at London’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court with two counts of attempted murder of Shloime Rand, 34, named in the charges as Norman Shine, and Moshe Shine, 76, and possession of a bladed instrument in connection with Wednesday’s attack.

Somali-born British citizen Suleiman was also charged with attempted murder in connection with a separate incident in South London earlier the same day. Prosecutor Emma Harraway claimed a man visited her home and tried to stab her.

He allegedly traveled north of the British capital later that day, he said.

Harraway said the first victim, Rand, was studying at a synagogue in Golders Green and was wearing “traditional clothing associated with an Orthodox Jewish man” when Suleiman allegedly ran towards him and stabbed him with a knife.

Suleiman allegedly attacked Shine, who was also wearing traditional Jewish clothing, while waiting at the bus stop before the suspect was arrested by police using a stun gun, Harraway said.

Rand suffered a punctured lung but has since been released from hospital, while Shine suffered a stab wound to his neck, but the wound was not life-threatening.

Accompanied by two security guards, Suleiman, dressed in a gray tracksuit and frequently stroking his goatee, appeared in the dock and was remanded in custody until his next appearance at the Old Bailey court in London on May 15.

Speaking only to confirm his name and date of birth, he did not enter a plea to the charges and the prosecution was told the court was told his address was a mental health facility in south London.

Stabbings Increase Fear Among Jews

The incident has taken on a political dimension ahead of local government elections on May 7, in which Starmer’s Labor Party is likely to suffer heavy losses and could even trigger an internal challenge to his leadership.

UK Reform leader Nigel Farage and Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch visited the site of the attack to reinforce the message voiced by some in the community that the government was failing to protect Jews.

Starmer, who condemned the incident and promised more funding and tougher legislation, was heckled by a small group of people during his visit, including London police chief Mark Rowley.
