Person shot by law enforcement near Washington monument, Secret Service says | Washington DC

A man was shot by law enforcement near the Washington monument on Monday, the Secret Service said. The shooting occurred shortly after J.D. Vance’s motorcade passed through the area.
The man was first identified by plainclothes police officers as appearing suspicious and was believed to be carrying a firearm, according to Secret Service deputy director Matthew Quinn. These officers requested support from uniformed agents. When the man saw the uniformed agents, he fled on foot, drew his gun and fired, Quinn said.
“They returned fire and engaged in a firefight,” Quinn said. “That person was shot, [and] He has since been transferred to the hospital.
Quinn declined to comment on the person’s condition. The circumstances of the shooting, which occurred near 15th Street and Independence Avenue, are not yet known. Quinn said it was unclear whether Vance was the target.
A young bystander was also shot but did not suffer life-threatening injuries, Quinn said. They are receiving treatment in the hospital.
As emergency crews responded to the shooting near the White House, where Donald Trump was holding a small business event, the Secret Service encouraged people to avoid the area.
The White House was briefly closed while authorities investigated the incident. The Secret Service took the journalists who were outside into the briefing room, and Trump continued his event uninterrupted.
