Starmer warns Iran’s attempts to destabilise British society ‘will not be tolerated’

Sir Keir Starmer said Iranian attempts to destabilize British society “will not be tolerated” amid suspicions Tehran is fueling antisemitism.
The Prime Minister told a Downing Street roundtable that the government was investigating whether foreign states were behind recent attacks on the UK’s Jewish community.
Speaking to leaders of community groups, senior government ministers and police chiefs following the stabbing attack in Golders Green last week, Sir Keir warned there would be “consequences” if Iran was found responsible.
“One of the lines of inquiry is whether a foreign state is behind some of these events,” he said.
“We are of course exploring all possibilities and are clear that there will be consequences for these actions if this proves to be the case.”
“Our message to Iran or any country that tries to incite violence, hatred or division in society is that this will not be tolerated.”

Describing the situation as a “crisis” following last week’s attack in north London, Sir Keir said new legislation would be rushed through to tackle “malicious threats”.
He told the meeting that security, although necessary, was “not sufficient” and promised to “deal with the forces that fueled this hatred in the first place”.
“We clearly see the fact that there is no single source of anti-Semitism: Islamists, far-left, far-right, they all target Jewish communities,” he said.
“That is why this government has implemented the first coordinated national plan to strengthen cohesion and combat extremism in all its forms.”
