Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Appointed as New Navy Chief

New Delhi: The Government on Saturday appointed Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as Chief of Naval Staff, according to a statement made by the Ministry of Defence.

The current Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, will retire on May 31, 2026.

Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan took over as the 34th Flag Officer Commanding General of Western Naval Command on 31 July 2025.

The Flag Officer was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 July 1987 and specializes in Communications and Electronic Warfare.

He is a graduate of the Khadakvasla National Defense Academy; Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham, United Kingdom; Naval Academy, Karanja; and the United States Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island.

The Admiral, who is the recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal, has held many important operational, personnel and training positions throughout his maritime career.

These include command of the missile carriers INS Vidyut and INS Vinash; missile corvette INS Kulish; guided missile destroyer INS Mysore; and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.

After rising to the rank of Rear Admiral, he served as Principal Staff Officer (Training) at Headquarters Southern Naval Command, Kochi, and played a key role in conducting training across the Indian Navy.

He was also instrumental in establishing the Indian Maritime Security Team, which oversees operational security across all verticals of the Navy.

He later headed the Naval Labor Organization as Flag Officer Sea Training and was subsequently appointed Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet.

After commanding the Sword Arm, he was appointed Flag Officer Offshore Defense Advisory Group and Adviser, Offshore Security and Defence, to the Government of India.

Promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral, he served as Flag Officer, Chief of Staff of Western Naval Command, Controller of Personnel Services, and Chief of Personnel at Naval Headquarters.

Prior to his current assignment, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Navy at Naval Headquarters.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan’s educational qualifications include a bachelor’s degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; Master’s degree in Telecommunications from Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi; an MA in Defense Studies from King’s College London; MPhil in Strategic Studies from the University of Mumbai; and a PhD in International Studies from the University of Mumbai.
