With Keir Starmer facing growing calls to resign, the Prime Minister’s chances of leading his party at the next election appear to be approaching zero.
And social media users have reacted to Sir Keir’s premiership falling into free fall today, posting a series of tongue-in-cheek memes making light of the situation.
Some have compared his situation to the Black Knight character from Monty Python, who refuses to let King Arthur pass even though all his limbs have been amputated.
Others recalled the famous line ‘Fame, infamy, it’s all because of me’, uttered by Kenneth Williams as Julius Caesar in the 1964 comedy Carry On Cleo.
There was a picture in Love All Around with Hugh Grant as Prime Minister and the headline read: ‘Centre-Left Labor backbench candidates announce their preference to replace Starmer as Prime Minister.’
Another posted a photo of Steve McClaren on Sky Sports News, joking that the former England manager had said he ‘didn’t think the PM was going anywhere’.
