How Meghan broke royal protocol at wedding – and Harry approved | Royal | News

According to reports, Meghan Markle broke royal protocol with a major move at her wedding to Prince Harry, and her new husband approved it. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex exchanged vows in a televised ceremony at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle in May 2018, before leading their guests to a lunch reception followed by King George III. An evening party hosted by Charles followed.

Reports ahead of the wedding suggested Meghan planned to defy royal tradition by giving a speech, and eyewitnesses confirmed she did so by giving a “compassionate” speech at the reception. Prince Harry fully supports moving away from tradition and thinks it’s a “great idea”, a source told the Sunday Times.

Meghan explained that she wanted to “share a story about the man I love and how we met,” referencing the conversation in the couple’s 2022 Netflix documentary Harry and Meghan.

The conversation went like this: “Let’s call it a modern fairy tale. Once upon a time there was a girl in Los Angeles. Some called her an actress. There was a guy from London. Some called him a prince.”

“None of these people fully understood it. Because it’s a love story about a boy and a girl who were meant to be together.”

Addressing Harry directly, Meghan continued: “I appreciate, respect and honor you, my treasure, for the family we will create and our love story that will last forever.”

Harry also made a “frank” speech at the reception, according to guests. “He promised that all Americans would not steal swords and said, ‘Please be quiet when you leave because you don’t want to wake the neighbors,'” one of them told People Magazine.

These included footage of the couple dancing and grinning, the ceremony itself and a performance by Sir Elton John.

She also posted a video on her Instagram story of Harry singing “happy birthday” while walking barefoot, holding a cake with candles inside.

Their children Archie and Lilibet could be heard helping sing in the background.
