Queensland man charged with murder after allegedly beating elderly pedestrian to death with pole | Queensland

A man has been charged with murder after allegedly beating a 78-year-old pedestrian to death with a metal pole during a violent and random attack that left two men injured.

A 36-year-old Bundaberg West man has been charged with murder and attempted murder after allegedly driving and attacking multiple people near Bundaberg, Queensland, on Wednesday afternoon.

The alleged crime spree began around 1.45pm when the man deliberately turned his silver Subaru Liberty sedan into a Tesla on the Bruce Highway in Glenorchy and then drove away, verbally abusing the driver.

A short time later, in nearby Childers, the man allegedly flipped his car into a Mitsubishi Pajero and the 65-year-old driver quickly got out of his car to inspect the damage.

Police allege the Subaru driver then reversed his car towards the Pajero driver, got out of his car and punched him in the head multiple times before running away.

The 65-year-old man, who suffered serious head injuries, was taken to hospital.

A few minutes later, at 2.38pm, the Subaru driver stopped again and allegedly attacked a 78-year-old man walking along Whitebridge Road in Northern ISIS.

The driver allegedly punched the elderly man in the head and then hit him with a metal pole before fleeing the scene again.

The seriously injured pedestrian died at the scene.

At 2.53pm, the 36-year-old man allegedly attacked another person, a 66-year-old man, in Childers and members of the public intervened to restrain him.

The teams took the person into custody a short time later.

The 66-year-old man was hospitalized with a neck injury.

“The victims in all of these incidents are not believed to be known to the 36-year-old man,” Queensland police said.

The 36-year-old man was charged Thursday morning with one count each of murder, attempted murder, acts intended to maim/disfigure/maim, dangerous operation of a vehicle and carjacking.

He was due to appear at Gladstone magistrates’ court via video link on Thursday.
