JSW Group on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, commenced construction of the blast furnace of the proposed 13.2 million tonnes per annum Integrated Steel Plant at Paradeep in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district, one of the largest investments undertaken by the company.

According to the company, Paradeep Integrated Steel Plant will be developed in phases with a planned capacity of 13.2 MTPA and an estimated investment of around 65,000 crore in phases.

“Spread over an area of approximately 2,950 acres, the project is strategically located on Odisha’s coastline, offering strong port connectivity, efficient access to raw materials and robust logistics infrastructure to serve both local and international markets,” he said.

At the beginning of 2000, South Korean steel giant POSCO offered to establish a steel plant in the same location. However, the project could not be implemented due to local resistance.

Prime Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and JSW Group Chairman and Managing Director Sajjan Jindal were present on the occasion.

“JSW Steel will invest a total of Rs 1.25 lakh crore in this project, which will be the largest investment in the history of Odisha. The state-of-the-art facility, which will be implemented in two phases, will produce around 24 million tonnes of steel annually. It will also include a 12 million tonnes cement plant, a 900 MW power system and a dedicated jetty,” the Odisha Government said.

“A project that people have been waiting for two decades and whose symbolic foundations were laid just two years ago has begun to move forward rapidly under the new ‘twin-engine’ government,” Mr. Majhi said. Odisha CM said the project is likely to start steel production by 2028.

Speaking on this occasion, he emphasized that the foundations of different industrial projects have been laid. Mr. Majhi spoke about the success of Trimetro Garments in Khordha, where production started within a year of laying the foundation stone.

Odisha CM said his government has approved 433 projects involving investments worth Rs 8.5 lakh crore, which are expected to create more than 5 lakh jobs.

“So far, the foundation laying work of 148 projects has been completed and employment has been created for around 2.37 lakh youth,” Mr. Majhi said.

Describing this as a historic event in terms of industrial development, Industry Minister Sampad Chandra Swain said that the long-awaited dream of the local people is now ready to become a reality, thanks to the determined and transparent policies of the government.
