Major update on huge new Morrisons store – 25,000 sq ft | UK | News

The proposals include a 25,000 sq ft store featuring landscaped public spaces, new retail and supporting infrastructure, as well as popular Market Street with specialist butchers and fishmongers, according to an announcement from Morrisons today. Morrisons will submit its proposals as a two-part hybrid planning application in the hope of speeding up the process. The first part consists of detailed plans for the supermarket, parking facilities and public spaces, including the new town square. The second section outlines proposals for an additional 40,000 sq ft of retail space on the eastern side of the site, which could include a variety of drive-thru units such as coffee or sandwich shops.
More details about the eastern part of the site will be available next month, Morrisons said. It has also been confirmed that the Peacehaven Library and Community House will be retained. Alternative plans for the Peacehaven Library have been considered before.
Justin Lawrence, Development Manager at Morrisons, said: “We recognize the importance of this development to the residents of Peacehaven and appreciate people’s patience.
“We have worked with council officials to ensure our plans align with local priorities and are achievable. We now look forward to sharing these with the community to secure planning consent for the supermarket in the coming months.”
The Peacehaven store will feature electric vehicle (EV) charging points and photovoltaic panels on the store roof for solar power generation to help Morrisons achieve Net Zero targets.
Morrisons said the affected stores had been making losses for some time and it was not possible to keep them open. The company said that although efforts had been made to improve trading, the stores’ performance had “struggled for a number of years”.
