Jen Psaki worries Democratic messaging is being drowned out by Trump

MS NOW host Jen Psaki worried Wednesday that the Democratic Party is struggling to break into the current media landscape and wondered whether President Donald Trump is partly to blame for frequently dominating the news cycle, even on his own show.
Psaki spoke with former ABC News correspondent Terry Moran and said that Democrats do not have the lead that would be expected before the midterm elections in November, as Trump’s approval ratings remain low.
Psaki said excitement is high for Democrats, but the party is struggling to present itself as anything more than anti-Trump.
“It took a while for most of the leading Democratic voices to move beyond just being anti-Trump to being anti-Trump, right? ‘We’re not for Trump, but here’s what we’re offering,'” he said.

“I would also say, with some credit to leading Democrats, it’s very difficult to get past these things,” Psaki said. he added. “And I realized I have a platform, you have a platform — maybe we’re all wrong about this — but the things Trump does every day are so crazy that it’s hard for Democrats to get around it: ‘Here’s my plan to protect kids under six with additional health care benefits. Here’s my plan to provide more aid for pre-K education.'”
The MS NOW host said it was difficult to decide who to book outside of Trump-focused news reactions, adding, “Maybe this is a mistake.”
“So I think there are a lot of factors at play here, but the biggest one is that even though they don’t like Trump, I don’t think the public knows enough about Democrats’ plans to make their lives better,” he said.

Moran agreed with Psaki and questioned how journalists should approach the subject.
“And, you know, he’s in the chaos and he’s taking control of every second of every day as best he can,” he said. “And that leaves any journalist, any program, any independent journalist, any broadcast journalist, faced with the same problem: Are you covering the Trump show, or are you covering the Trump administration and what people need to know about it?”

In April, Psaki told Stephen A. Smith that she didn’t know why some on the left were spending so much time talking about invoking the 25th Amendment against President Donald Trump.
“There are some times, I think there are a lot of people — and I can’t speak for everyone on the left, nor do I agree with everything everyone on the left says — you know, sometimes it’s not constructive,” Psaki said at the time.

“I mean, you mentioned the 25th Amendment,” he continued. “I don’t have a problem with people saying they’re in favor of the 25th Amendment, but it’s not going to happen. So it’s like, why are we wasting so much time, you know?”
