Sooryavanshi’s catch! Brands set tight field as endorsement race heats up after IPL breakout

New Delhi | Mumbai: At least half a dozen leading brands are lining up with checkbooks in hand to sign the Indian Premier League’s 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, administrators said, saying they were directly aware of the developments. These include sports drink, cricket bat, nutrition and high-performance shoe labels.

Even though he wasn’t part of either of the finalists (Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Gujarat Titans on Sunday), the Rajasthan Royals player won hearts with his gutsy performance as the league’s top run-scorer.

“Brands are lining up to sign him for the first mover advantage – he has a long career ahead of him – and another reason is that there is sort of a gap in reliable Indian cricketers at the moment and some of the big names are not performing,” said one of the executives mentioned. “Also worth noting is that, unlike the previous periods when agreements were made for 3-5 years, brand owners now want to stick to relationships of only 2-3 years. In this way, brands have the option of not renewing contracts depending on the form of the athlete.”

Beyond endorsement fees, the real story is about how its brand is carefully built, industry executives said.

After winning the Orange Cap and the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award with 776 runs in 16 matches and a strike rate of 237.30, Sooryavanshi has already entered the premium endorsement league with a trade value of over ₹1 crore per deal.
