Tim David banned from IPL 2027 RCB’s first match for throwing ice bag aggressively at umpire

A disciplined shift emerged in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s title-winning IPL 2026 campaign; Batsman Tim David has been handed a one-match suspension for next season after violating the league’s Code of Conduct in Sunday’s final against Gujarat Titans.

The IPL on Monday fined David 50% of his match fee and awarded him two penalty points for the Level 1 offense he committed during the IPL 2026 final match at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Punishment has greater consequences than the fine itself. The latest offense took David’s point tally for the season to five and triggered an automatic one-match suspension under IPL regulations. As a result, the Australian will miss the opening match of the next IPL season or the first match of the team he represents in IPL 2027.

The IPL said in a statement that David had violated Article 2.9 of the league’s Code of Conduct. He said he was found guilty of violating art. This provision prohibits players from throwing any cricket equipment, including a ball or items such as water bottles, onto or near a player, team official, referee, match referee or any other person in an inappropriate or dangerous manner during a match.

According to IPL, the incident took place in the 10th over of the first innings. Following the fall of a wicket, David aggressively hurled an ice bag at umpire Nitin Menon.

“David was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which relates to the “inappropriate and/or dangerous throwing of a ball (or any cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Team Official, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third party during the match,” the IPL statement said. “An aggressive ice pack was used towards umpire Nitin Menon,” the IPL statement said.

David accepted the charge and punishment given by match referee Javagal Srinath.

The IPL said this was the batsman’s third Tier 1 strike of the season. He had previously received one penalty point in the 20th Match and two penalty points in the 54th Match. His final charge added two more points, bringing his total to five.

“David admitted the offense and accepted the sanction imposed by Match Referee Mr. Javagal Srinath. This was David’s third Level 1 offense of the season, with his first offense occurring in Match 20 (one Penalty Point) and his second offense in Match 54 (two Penalty Points). He has now accumulated five Penalty Points, resulting in a one-match suspension. Accordingly, he will be suspended for either RCB’s first match of the next IPL season or the following IPL season,” the IPL statement said. It was stated that it was the first game of the series it represents in 2027.

The disciplinary action came just hours after RCB celebrated another major milestone. Rajat Patidar-led Bengaluru clinched their second consecutive IPL crown with a five-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans in the final.

This victory also placed RCB among elite company. They became the third team to successfully defend the IPL title after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

After restricting Gujarat Titans to 155/8, RCB chased the target with five wickets in hand and two wickets in reserve. Virat Kohli powered the chase with an unbeaten 75 from 42 balls and helped Bengaluru win the title even if David’s costly error ensured the celebrations would result in an unwanted suspension.
