VRO Gets 7-Year Jail In Corruption Case

The Special Judge in charge of ACB cases in Kurnool on Tuesday convicted a village revenue officer (VRO) in a corruption case and sentenced him to seven years rigorous imprisonment.

The accused, 50-year-old Chitrala Gangamma, VRO of Valluru in YSR Kadapa district, was convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The court also imposed a fine of ₹20,000.
According to the prosecution, Gangamma demanded a bribe of ₹ 5,000 from farmer P. Mallikharjuna Reddy to process compensation for crop loss caused by a 765 KV transmission line proposed to pass through his land.

Following the complaint, ACB officials laid a trap and caught VRO red-handed while accepting bribes on February 20, 2018. The court, which questioned 22 witnesses during the trial, found him guilty. Gangamma is currently working in Kamalapuram.

University student found dead in his hostel room

A second-year student was found dead under suspicious circumstances in his hostel room in Anantapur on Tuesday, prompting a police investigation.

According to sources, Nandini (19), a native of Narpala mandal, was continuing her education in a private college and was staying in the hostel of the institution. Other students reportedly found him dead in his room on Tuesday morning and immediately informed the college and hostel management, who in turn informed the police.

Two City police arrived on the scene and began a preliminary investigation. A lawsuit was filed upon the complaint of the student’s parent.

Police took the body to another location for autopsy and are investigating the reasons that led to the woman’s death. The exact cause of death has not yet been determined.

Bail request of two defendants in SUV clash case rejected

A city court on Tuesday rejected bail pleas of Bolla Om and Lingamaneni Rohit, who are accused of ramming an SUV on Patamata High Voltage Highway in Vijayawada on May 22.
The court also postponed the hearing on the police’s petition to keep the duo in custody for five days for further interrogation to Wednesday. Following the argument, the suspects were arrested and arrested after they allegedly chased the Thar SUVs and crashed into each other, causing panic among the drivers.

Young man killed by lightning strike

A 24-year-old shepherd died after being struck by lightning in Gogulampadu Kothuru, a hamlet of Chintalapudi village, on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Gangula Alia Babu. According to sources, he had taken his sheep to graze when a sudden downpour accompanied by thunder and lightning hit the area in the afternoon. He was struck by lightning while tending to the herd and died at the scene.
Meanwhile, rains accompanied by thunder and lightning provided relief from the scorching summer heat in East and West Godavari districts. However, the relief was short-lived as high humidity and lack of breeze disturbed the residents. Moderate rainfall was observed in many regions during the day.

6 cricket bookies arrested in Proddatur raid

Proddatur police arrested six bookmakers and seized ₹2.20 lakh cash, 10 mobile phones and a laptop during a raid on Tuesday, as part of a major crackdown on illegal cricket betting.

ASP Vibhu Krishna said the operation was carried out based on intelligence received earlier after the police monitored the group’s activities. Authorities also frozen bank accounts linked to the accused containing ₹ 4.14 lakh.

A lawsuit was filed against 12 people allegedly affiliated with the betting network, and efforts are continuing to capture and arrest them. One of the accused is reportedly associated with the Maidukuru Hospital Development Committee.

The arrests come a day after Kadapa Taluk police busted another cricket betting racket; This underlined the intensified action against illegal betting operations in the region. Further investigation is ongoing.
