Lady Pamela Hicks, Queen Elizabeth’s bridesmaid and confidante, dies aged 97

Queen Elizabeth’s close confidant Lady Pamela Hicks has died at the age of 97, her daughter announced.

Lady Pamela was a bridesmaid at the Queen’s wedding and later one of her bridesmaids.

His death was confirmed by his daughter, designer India Hicks, in a social media post on Friday.

Ms Hicks wrote: “My mother died peacefully today. While there is no tragedy in the death of a 97-year-old who lived a full life, I know grief will be inevitable and waiting around for me, but today I am grateful that she was my mother.”

“And through the prism of a crowded and remarkable past, he forged a unique friendship, carrying his memories lightly and always with humor.

“To the end, my mother retained the impeccable style, sharp wit and effortless charm that made her not only a cherished institution, but also the last of its kind.”

Lady Pamela was the daughter of the King’s great-uncle, Earl Mountbatten. He was the cousin of the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and third cousin of Queen Elizabeth.

Born in Barcelona in 1929, he was the great-grandson of Queen Victoria and the last Empress of Russia, Alexandra Feodorovna.

In 1947, Lady Pamela traveled with her family to British India; where his father served as the last Governor General of the country and subsequently the Governor General of post-Partition India.

When the Queen learned of the death of her father, George VI, on February 6, 1952, she was with Elizabeth in Kenya as her maid of honor.

He also accompanied the Queen on her royal tour in 1953 and 1954, visiting countries such as Jamaica, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Libya, Malta and Gibraltar.

Lady Pamela married interior architect and designer David Nightingale Hicks in 1960. Among the bridesmaids was young Princess Anne.

The couple had three children: Edwina, Ashley and India.

Lady Pamela has published two memoirs. One, India Rememberedfocused on his time in the country during the division and transfer of power.
