Lorenzo Lemalu: Slain underworld figure’s funeral service hit by gunshots, burnt car found

The funeral of a slain Sydney gangster was rocked by a hail of bullets from an SUV.

A service was held for Lorenzo Lemalu, 24, at Punchbowl’s Diamond Venues on Saturday afternoon after he was shot and killed in Vietnam on May 21.

Lemalu was believed to be a senior figure in Sydney’s underworld criminal gang, the Coconut Cartel.

According to NSW Police, shots were fired at the scene from an unknown SUV at around 2.20pm before the vehicle fled the scene.

Police said no injuries were reported and the vehicle was believed to have been found engulfed in flames a short time later.

Video of the shooting, which showed more than two dozen shots fired on the second floor of the building, was shared online by crime news outlet SCN WorldStar.

“Yeah, yeah, that window is right here,” a male voice can be heard saying before a gloved and hooded passenger in the back of the vehicle opens fire.

“Keep going because you keep going.

“Is it over? Come on, let’s leave it at that, young man.”

Lemalu was shot outside a seafood restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City two weeks ago.

Two Samoan citizens have been charged in connection with his death in the Southeast Asian country, with police claiming they were acting “on the instructions of a person abroad”.

Lemalu’s funeral and burial are planned for Sunday.
