Essex mum jailed for 21 years after murdering her 14-month-old son | UK | News

An Essex mother who killed her 14-month-old son in the attic of her home before hiding from police has been jailed for at least 21 years and seven days. Emma Barnett, 36, from Debden, was found guilty of murdering her son Oakley after an 18-day trial at Cambridge Crown Court. Jurors heard she gave the toddler a lethal combination of milk and drugs at their Chester Road home in November 2024.
Sentencing Barnett on Friday, June 5, Mr Justice Sweeting said the murder had involved an element of “planning and preparation” and had “deprived Oakley of all the life she had ahead of her”. Emergency services were called to the property after concerns grew for the welfare of both Barnett and his young son. The couple was initially reported missing. When officers searched the address, they discovered Barnett hiding in the attic with Oakley. After speaking with Barnett, who opened the attic door and refused to come downstairs, police became increasingly concerned about the toddler’s safety. EssexLive. Officers eventually forced their way into the attic after Barnett said, “I killed him.”
Oakley was taken to hospital but later died. Barnett received medical treatment before being arrested on suspicion of murder in January 2025. He was later interviewed and formally charged in June.
Following Barnett’s conviction on May 28, Oakley’s devastated family paid tribute to the little boy.
They said: “Oakley filled every room with light, laughter and love.
“With her beautiful curly hair and big blue eyes, she captured the hearts of everyone who met her.
“His smile could brighten even the darkest day, and his kind spirit brought so much happiness to our family.”
Detective Inspector James Holmes also paid tribute to Oakley after the sentencing.
He said: “This was an extremely tragic and distressing incident. It has had a devastating impact on all of us working on the investigation.
“Barnett committed this horrific act and today he was rightfully punished for his actions.
“I hope this brings closure to Oakley’s loved ones and helps them move forward.
“Our thoughts are with them and Oakley.”
