Trump announces US-Iran peace deal, Strait of Hormuz set to reopen

The United States and Iran have officially reached a peace agreement, President Donald Trump announced Sunday, marking a major diplomatic breakthrough that will reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.

“The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” Trump said in his post on Truth Social.

“Congratulations to you all! I hereby authorize the free opening of the Strait of Hormuz and also authorize the immediate lifting of the U.S. Navy blockade. World Ships, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose country is mediating, was the first to announce the peace agreement, saying a signing ceremony was planned for Friday in Switzerland.

Trump added that the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened after the parties officially sign the agreement.

“With the signing of the Agreement on Friday and the opening of the Bosphorus for the purpose of clearing mines, oil will flow from both ends again for the Region and the World!” he said.

According to Sharif, the agreement includes ending military operations in the region, including Lebanon, where Iran-backed terrorist proxy Hezbollah is engaged in conflict with Israel.

“Both sides declared an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon,” he said.

Additional details of the deal, including provisions related to Iran’s nuclear program, were not immediately released.

According to Reuters, Iran’s deputy foreign minister said that talks with the United States on a final and more comprehensive agreement will take place during the 60-day ceasefire period.

The outlet reported that the future of Iran’s nuclear program will be discussed in upcoming negotiations. Trump has long argued that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons and has repeatedly promised to prevent Tehran from developing, acquiring or acquiring nuclear weapons.

Trump also praised his administration for securing the deal.

“This Grand Agreement will bring Peace and Security to the entire Region,” he said. “Many presidents before me tried to make peace with Iran, and they all failed. For the first time, the region’s leaders have found a President who can help them achieve true peace.”

Sharif also thanked the United States and Iran for their “commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict” and Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye for their contributions to mediation efforts.

Once the agreement comes into force, mediators are expected to facilitate a series of meetings this week that could form the basis of technical negotiations and a formal signing ceremony, Sharif said.

The peace deal will formally end the high-stakes conflict that began on February 28, disrupting nearly 20% of global oil shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz and contributing to soaring energy prices around the world.

Nearly a year has passed since Israel launched its major offensive against Iran during Operation Rising Lion. The attacks sparked a 12-day conflict between the countries before Trump ordered attacks on three nuclear facilities later that month.
