Person dies and child fighting for life after train hits car at level crossing

Today, one person died and a child is struggling to survive as a result of a train hitting a car at a level crossing.

The fatal incident happened at around 8.50am on Station Road in Hoghton, south-east of Preston.

Police said two people were in the car that was hit by the passenger train.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while a child, whose age has not yet been determined, was taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

No passengers on the train were injured.

Fire and ambulance crews attended, as well as officers from British Transport Police and South Ribble Police.

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said: ‘We responded to an incident in Hoghton, Lancashire, at 8.50am today following reports of a train and a car colliding.

‘A number of clinical teams attended the scene, including our hazardous area response team and two air ambulances.

One person died and a child is struggling to survive as a result of the train hitting a car at a level crossing.

‘Sadly, one child suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for further treatment.

‘No passenger traveling on the train required treatment from the ambulance crew.’

A South Ribble Police spokesman confirmed they were assisting at the scene and advised drivers to avoid the area.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: ‘We are currently at the scene of a level crossing in Hoghton, Lancashire, following reports that a train has crashed into a car.

‘Paramedics and fire brigade are there too. It was learned that one of the two people in the vehicle died at the scene, while the other was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

‘No other injuries to passengers on the train have been reported at this time.’
