Former party leader Lawrence Springborg and other figures added to state boards
Three leading LNP figures have been quietly added to state boards, with appointments announced after business on Friday.
Goondiwindi mayor Lawrence Springborg has been appointed to the WorkCover Queensland board.
Springborg has served as mayor since 2020. He was previously a state MP for the seats of Carnarvon, Warwick and the Southern Downs. During this time he served as leader of the National Party in Queensland and later as leader of the merged state LNP.
He also served as LNP leader from 2021 to 2025.
News Corp reported this week that Springborg will succeed Governor Jeannette Young after her five-year term ends at the end of this year.
Speaking to the media shortly after this news, Opposition Leader Steven Miles said Young “has been flawless throughout his entire five years” and that he would prefer him to continue.
“No matter who is in office, though… it’s important that the King recommends a governor who can be trusted and who will be above accusation and politics,” Miles said.
Asked whether Springborg would strive to be above politics, Miles said he would wait to see the final appointment, “but he is clearly not a non-partisan figure.”
Stafford’s LNP candidate Fiona Hammond has also been appointed to the board alongside Springborg.
Labour’s Luke Richmond claimed victory in the Stafford by-election in May, despite the party’s early votes trailing Hammond by almost 10 percentage points.
Matthew Crossley, Scott Armstrong, Roz White, Trent Twomey and Renee Cooper have also been added to the WorkCover board as directors.
Brisbane Councilor Krista Adams has been added to the Queensland Economic Development board, along with Tony Sowden, Michael McNab, Emma McCaughey and Sally Mlikota.
Adams has served as Wishart’s councilman since 2008. Earlier this week, he blamed NIMBYs for the scrapping of a pickleball court expansion project in his ward.
The park was already home to three pickleball courts and locals complained that the park lacked a toilet block and that there was not enough room to support the other three.
Kim McCosker, Tracie Deegan and Abby Sommer were also appointed to the Occupational Health and Safety board.
Mark Paddenburg has been appointed chairman of the Contract Cleaning Industry (Portable Long Service Permit) Authority and David Ford has been appointed vice chairman. Neville Wilmott and Bridey McMillan-Tooth were also added as directors.
