Mount Etna LIVE: Eruption sparks panic in Sicily as Catania Airport cancels flights | World | News

Sicily’s Mount Etna erupted as smoke filled the sky over the Italian island.

Catania Airport also had to suspend flights due to security concerns.

Ash reportedly began rising from Etna ar around 7.45am this morning and intensified just before 9am.

La Sicilia reports: “From 7:45 in the morning, ash emissions began from the vent in the upper eastern flank of the Voragine crater and intensified around 8:45 in the morning, forming an eruption cloud approximately 1.5 kilometers above the summit of the volcano. For safety reasons, incoming flights to Catania-Fontanarossa airport were suspended, while Ingv models show that the ash cloud will move towards the south and south-southeast sectors in the coming hours.”
