Congress says Nehru received Indonesia’s highest honour ‘without having to wrangle it’

New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday came down hard on Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he awarded Indonesia’s highest medal of honour, the ‘Republic of Indonesia Bintang Adipurna’ medal, saying India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru received the medal posthumously “without controversy”.

Modi was on Tuesday awarded the ‘Republic of Indonesia Bintang Adipurna’ medal, Indonesia’s highest honour, for his role in strengthening ties between both countries. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto presented the medal to Modi.

Responding to a post highlighting that Modi is the second Indian leader after Nehru to receive Indonesia’s highest honour, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said on X: “And Nehru received this award posthumously, without any need for debate.”

Modi had earlier said: “This morning, I too was bestowed with great affection the highest honor of Indonesia. This honor belongs to millions of Indians… It belongs to the sentiments of the Indonesian people, the historical and cordial ties between India and Indonesia.”

“I express my sincere gratitude to President Prabowo Ji, the Government of Indonesia and the people here,” Modi said in a post published by the Prime Minister’s Office on X. he said. Founded in 1959, the Indonesian Bintang Adipurna is the highest honor in the Republic of Indonesia.

This award is given to individuals who have rendered outstanding service to the unity, continuity and prosperity of the Republic of Indonesia.
