Andy Burnham was backed by 322 Labor MPs to become the party’s next leader on the first day of nominations. The Makerfield MP is the only declared candidate in the race to replace Sir Keir Starmer and is set to be crowned in a few weeks.
Nominations will remain open until July 16, but Mr Burnham’s potential final rival, Al Carns, ruled himself out of the running yesterday. The former Greater Manchester mayor, who appeared on

“That’s the circuit breaker I’m proposing: power out of Westminster, a reformed economy for ordinary people and good growth in every postcode.
“I want to empower MPs to bring the experiences of their constituents to the heart of government and draw on all areas of our Labor movement, drawing on all traditions and beliefs for a common cause.
“I want to thank every colleague who nominated me for their commitment to this vision.”
Mr Burnham said he nominated himself when he saw Labor MPs heading to Parliamentary Labor Party (PLP) offices this morning, many claiming to be the first.
In order for candidates to enter the ballot, they need the support of 81 members of parliament, including themselves.
In the absence of any other candidate, Mr Burnham will be formally declared leader of the Labor Party at a special conference on July 17 and is expected to become prime minister on July 20.
Even though he is the only person entering the race, he will take part in online meetings with Labor MPs on Monday evening.
