Nothing to suggest Ann Widdecombe killing was politically motivated, police say

Police investigating the alleged murder of Ann Widdecombe said there was “nothing to suggest that the incident was politically motivated”.

Following the arrest of a 28-year-old white British man in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Saturday, Devon and Cornwall Police added that they were not looking for anyone else in connection with his death.

The 78-year-old former MP and MP was found seriously injured at his home in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday.

Deputy Chief Constable Matt Longman said officers were keeping an “open mind” about a possible motive and there was not thought to be any threat to the wider public.

The arrest was made shortly after 21:00 GMT by officers from North East Counter Terrorism Police and South Yorkshire Police on behalf of that force.

Longman told reporters on Sunday that there was no information that the attack was linked to terrorism.
