mother teresa: Quote of the day by Mother Teresa: ‘There is more hunger in the world for love and appreciation in this world than…’ Powerful life lessons from inspiring quote on loneliness, compassion, kindness, humanity, love, physical sustenance, emotional and spiritual nourishment

Quote of the day today
Mother Teresa once said:
“There is more hunger in the world for love and appreciation than for bread.”
This quote explains that people suffer not only because they cannot find food, but also because they feel ignored, unwanted, or unloved. Physical hunger is often visible, but emotional pain often remains hidden.
Many people have adequate food, clothing and shelter but still struggle with loneliness. They may feel that no one values or understands them. Mother Teresa believed that such suffering deserved equal attention. His message asks people to look beyond material needs and understand the importance of emotional and spiritual nourishment.
Quote from Mother Teresa: Meaning and relevance
The quote remains valid because modern life often leaves people feeling disconnected despite constant communication through technology.
Its meaning can be understood in different ways:
- Love is a basic human need.
- Appreciation helps people feel valued.
- Kind words can improve someone’s day.
- Listening carefully is an act of care.
- Respect builds stronger relationships.
- Emotional support improves mental well-being.
- Compassion creates trust between people.
- Every person deserves kindness, regardless of their past.
The quote reminds people that emotional and spiritual poverty can be just as painful as physical poverty.
Life lessons from the quote
Mother Teresa’s words offer many lessons that people can follow every day.
Emotional nutrition is important
People need more than food to live a meaningful life. They also need encouragement, acceptance and emotional support. Feeling appreciated can increase confidence and reduce loneliness.
Start with your family and friends
Mother Teresa often said that love should begin at home. Showing appreciation for parents, children, partners, relatives and friends creates stronger families and communities. Simple actions around the home can make a lasting difference.
Small actions have lasting value
Helping others doesn’t always require money or great effort.
Simple actions include:
- Thank you.
- Listening without interrupting.
- Offering help.
- I’m checking in on someone who’s feeling lonely.
- Smiling at others.
- Speaking with respect.
These small gestures can make the other person feel important.
Give without expecting anything in return
Mother Teresa believed that kindness should not depend on receiving rewards. Helping people without expecting praise creates healthier relationships and builds trust between communities.
Why is emotional and spiritual nutrition important?
Food supports the body, but love and appreciation support the mind and emotions. People who feel respected often develop stronger relationships with their family, friends, and colleagues. On the other hand, people who are ignored may experience loneliness and isolation. The quote encourages everyone to notice those who silently need emotional support. Offering time, attention and understanding can make a difference.
Who was Mother Teresa?
Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910 in Skopje, then part of the Ottoman Empire and now in the Republic of North Macedonia. He belonged to an ethnic Albanian family. In 1928 she traveled to Ireland and joined the Sisters of Loreto at the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Just a few weeks later he went to India to start teaching. After taking her religious vows, she chose the name Teresa in honor of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. He worked as a teacher for 17 years in a Loreto school in Calcutta, now Kolkata.
The beginning of your mission
In 1946, Mother Teresa experienced what she called “a call within a call.” He believed that God wanted him to leave teaching and devote his life to serving the poor and sick. He moved to the poor neighborhoods of Calcutta.
After receiving permission to begin his work in 1948, he founded the Missionaries of Charity. The organization focused on helping poor, sick, abandoned and dying people. Volunteers soon joined his efforts. The organization also opened schools and medical centers.
The Growth of Missionaries of Charity
The Missionaries of Charity received official recognition by Pope Pius XII in 1950. In 1952, Mother Teresa founded Nirmal Hriday, a hospice where people with terminal illnesses could receive care and die with dignity.
The organization also opened centers for:
- Old people.
- Blind people.
- Disabled people.
- People affected by leprosy.
He also helped found Shanti Nagar, a community for people living with leprosy near Asansol, India. The Missionaries of Charity later spread throughout the world. At the time of her death, the organization operated hundreds of centers in more than 90 countries, staffing nearly 4,000 nuns and hundreds of thousands of lay workers.
Awards and recognition
Mother Teresa was deemed worthy of many awards throughout her life.
Some of the main recognitions include:
- Padma Shri in 1962.
- Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971.
- Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
- Bharat Ratna in 1980.
These awards recognized his work in serving poor and vulnerable people.
Later years and canonization
Mother Teresa suffered health problems in later years, including a heart attack in 1989. He resigned as president of the Missionaries of Charity in 1990, but returned to office after members voted to continue.
In 1997, Sister Nirmala became his successor. Mother Teresa died in Calcutta on September 5, 1997. The process of canonizing him began soon after his death. He was canonized on October 19, 2003. On September 4, 2016, Pope Francis canonized her as St. Teresa of Calcutta.
His private struggle with faith
Letters published in 2007 after Mother Teresa’s death revealed that she experienced spiritual darkness for many years. Although he was committed to serving others, he often wrote that he felt distant from God’s presence. Despite these personal struggles, he continued his mission and never stopped helping people. His letters showed that faith can exist even in times of doubt.
Why is this quote still important?
Mother Teresa’s words remain important because people continue to seek love, acceptance and appreciation.
The quote reminds people:
- Emotional needs deserve attention.
- Kindness costs nothing.
- Appreciation strengthens relationships.
- Compassion heals societies.
- Every person can help reduce loneliness.
His message encourages people to create positive change with simple daily actions rather than waiting for big opportunities.
