Crews on a freight train in Ontario were truly horrified when an unthinkable happened during their shift on Tuesday.

As of this morning, more than 830 wildfires are burning across Canada, primarily in western central Ontario. Harrowing footage captures the alarming moment a train carrying workers and flammable materials was engulfed by a raging bushfire.

The clip, shared by MP Sol Mamakwa, shows the massive wall of flames near Armstrong, Ontario.

Frightened workers can be heard desperately discussing their options. “This could be over our heads here. This is getting a little scary,” one worker warned as conditions deteriorated rapidly.

“Holy s—” he later shouted as a colleague began recording the terrifying ordeal on his mobile phone.

“While there is no immediate threat to public safety, emergency responders and railway officials are working together to assess conditions and support ongoing safety measures,” Ontario Provincial Police said. he said. Authorities also urged the public to avoid the area and stay away from the rail corridor as the fire continues to spread.

Of the 838 wildfires in Canada, 719 are considered to be out of control. This year alone, 2.96 million acres of land have burned in Canada.

Decreasing soil moisture and intensifying drought conditions suggest that climate change is fueling the increasing frequency and magnitude of wildfires in Canada.

As fires continue to ravage Canada, shifting winds are driving smoke directly into the United States, creating hazardous air quality for millions of residents living in the Upper Midwest and Northeast for the rest of the week.

“Okay, you all need to hurry here. We are literally on fire,” the man said.

Another worker inside the train became increasingly frantic and shouted: “This needs to go faster.”

Operations came to a halt after wildfire rocked the region, given that Canadian National Railway trains were carrying flammable material, according to Superior North News.

A company spokesperson confirmed to the local news outlet that all staff were later evacuated from the trains overnight.

As thick smoke blanketed northern Wisconsin on Wednesday morning, Duluth, Minnesota, and Marquette, Michigan, were also shrouded in similarly thick, thick smoke.

This wave of smoke coincides with extreme heat across the country. The Northeast and Upper Midwest are expected to bear the brunt of wildfire smoke in Canada; Temperatures are expected to climb into the high 90s and triple digits on Wednesday and Thursday.

On a more positive note, precipitation is expected in the upper Midwest on Friday and the Northeast on Saturday, which will provide much-needed relief from the choking smoke.
