Telangana now has 10,000 MBBS seats after NMC approves 810 additional seats

Telangana crossed the 10,000 mark in the number of MBBS seats after the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved 810 additional seats for the academic year 2026-27, taking the state’s total intake from 9,440 to 10,250. The expansion places Telangana among only five States in the country with more than 10,000 MBBS seats.

The increase comes as part of the NMC Medical Assessment and Grading Board (MARB)’s latest seat matrix, released on July 14, which approved 9,911 additional MBBS seats across India, taking the national total from 1.27 lakh to 1.36 lakh.

Of the 810 additional seats allocated to Telangana, 110 went to government medical colleges, while the remaining 700 were distributed among private institutions. The approvals cover 13 existing medical schools and a newly established private medical school that has received its first seats.

With the revised seat matrix, Telangana now has 66 medical colleges offering a total of 10,250 MBBS seats. Private medical colleges have 5,850 seats, while government institutions have 4,400 seats.

Among government colleges, GMC Mahabubnagar and GMC Siddipet got 25 additional seats each, while GMC Nizamabad and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Adilabad got 30 additional seats each.

The private sector accounts for most of the growth. Raja Rajeshwari Institute of Medical Sciences (Girls), a newly established college, has received approval for 150 MBBS seats. Maheshwara Medical College at Chitkul in Patancheru, MNR Medical College and Hospital, Sangareddy and Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences, Research Center and Teaching Hospital have increased their vacancy by 100 each.

Five additional private medical schools were given 50 quotas each. These are Bhaskar Medical College, Yenkapally; Malla Reddy Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad; Malla Reddy Women’s Medical College, Hyderabad; Mamata Academy of Medical Sciences, Bachupally; and SVS Medical College, Mahabubnagar.

The latest seat matrix also reveals Telangana’s position as one of India’s leading destinations for undergraduate medical education. Among all states, only Karnataka with 15,395 MBBS seats, Uttar Pradesh with 14,000, Tamil Nadu with 13,999, Maharashtra with 13,099 and Telangana with 10,250 have crossed the 10,000 seat milestone.
