Democrats get backlash for calling testosterone screening gender care

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Democrats, including Sens. Adam Schiff of California and Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, are being mocked online for likening the Pentagon’s new testosterone test and treatment plan to cross-gender “gender-affirming care.”

After Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced that the military would begin screening for testosterone deficiency, Democratic leaders immediately took to social media to mock the program as a return to “gender-affirming care.”

“Pete Hegseth promotes gender-affirming care…” Schiff wrote, while Hirono wrote: “So the Pentagon is now promoting gender-affirming care?” Many other Democrats have held similar positions.

However, their posts were immediately rejected.

Commenting on Schiff’s post, one user wrote: “Giving testosterone to men is gender affirming and not harmful. Chemically castrating a boy or performing a double mastectomy on a girl is gender denial, irreversible, and harmful.” [Schiff] “He’s not only a liar, he’s also stupid.”

Sen., D-Ill. In response to a post from Tammy Duckworth that said, “Sounds like gender-affirming interest to me,” conservative influencer “Just a Bama Gal” responded, “Not even close.”

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., even brought up the program at a House hearing, calling it “ridiculous” and suggesting the government could begin testing whether representatives are “man enough to be in Congress.”

“Forever Wars Secretary Pete Hegseth just announced they will be providing hormone therapy to male soldiers who do not have enough testosterone,” Jayapal wrote to X. “Let’s be clear: This is gender-affirming care and completely refutes all of Republicans’ attacks on transgender people.”

In response, a user using the name Ellie May wrote: “Your ignorance clearly shows. Giving your body more of something it naturally produces is not the equivalent of giving your body the opposite of what it needs to thrive and survive.”

“Are you crazy???” Another user named Leah Babcock replied: “When a woman goes through menopause and takes hormone supplements, she doesn’t suddenly become trans.”

Hegseth announced the program in a post on Wednesday. He announced that the Army will begin testosterone screening for soldiers over 30 and optional screening for those under 30 as part of an annual health assessment.

Service members will have the option to undergo testosterone replacement therapy if treatment is recommended, Hegseth said. He explained: “This isn’t about artificial enhancement; it’s about restoring and optimizing your natural abilities, maintaining your longevity and ensuring you have the biological foundation needed to sustain the fight.”

In an X post, he tagged his announcement “High-T War Department.”

Meaghan Mobbs, a former Army paratrooper and president of the nonprofit RT Weatherman Foundation, posted on

“Testosterone is not a cosmetic measure of ‘masculinity,'” Mobbs explained. “It is an important endocrine signal linked to muscle mass, bone density, red blood cell production, metabolism, sexual function, energy, concentration, mood, recovery, and physical performance. Clinically, low testosterone can manifest as fatigue, loss of strength and muscle, impaired concentration, irritability, depressed mood, decreased motivation, and decreased sexual function.”

“For years, veterans, clinicians and military families have begged the system,” he said. [take] Endocrine health has become more serious,” he adds. “Now there’s finally someone who’s made it. Thank God.”
