Andy Burnham’s wife Marie-France Van Heel is set to be Britain’s unofficial First Lady – but she is likely ‘to keep a low profile once he’s in No 10’

She was the ‘coolest girl in college’ when Andy Burnham won the heart of his Dutch-born future wife while they were both studying at Cambridge University.

Marie-France Van Heel, or Frankie as she is known, became Britain’s unofficial First Lady on Monday, nearly four decades after he courted her over their shared love of The Smiths.

Although her occasional public statements suggest she is as devoted to Left causes as her husband, friends are confident the ‘ambitious and independent-minded’ 56-year-old will not play a high-profile Cherie Blair-type role in Downing Street.

Instead, the unapologetic champion of Labour’s Net Zero targets is expected to spend most of his time 200 miles north, pursuing his own high-flying marketing career at an electric car charging network in the former Manchester fiefdom.

‘He didn’t enjoy being a political peer when Andy was in the Cabinet and was determined to keep a low profile when Andy came in at No. 10,’ a former colleague said last week.

‘I’m sure Frankie will show up and be supportive when needed, but he’s not exactly comfortable being in the spotlight.’

Described by a close friend as ‘beautiful, very kind and extremely intelligent’, he met the future prime minister in 1988 while they were both studying at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. Mr. Burnham later recalled that he was ‘trying to impress the incoming freshmen girls’ when he found someone who liked The Smiths. “The rest, as they say, is history,” he added.

Then English professor John Mullan recently recalled: ‘Frankie was the coolest girl at university, she was even Dutch! – and when Andy became her official boyfriend (her fellow students all seemed to imagine she had chosen him), there was some surprise and a sense that he was digging the ponds.’

For his part, in a video about his failed Labor leadership bid in 2015, he humorously recalled being duped by “long hair, good looks and a unibrow”.

In response to her reminder of how he had initially been put off when she confessed on the night they met that her aim was to get into Parliament, Mr Burnham humorously said: ‘You’ve had your warning then! If I were you then you should have come out!’

An exchange during this campaign (while their youngest daughter was still in primary school) shows how damaging the campaign was to family life. After speaking at an event, Mr Burnham asked if anyone had any questions – only for Ms Van Heel to raise her hand and say: ‘I was going to ask when you’re coming home next?’

He replied shyly: ‘Hmm, a week on Thursday.’

In the early years of their relationship, Ms Van Heel appeared on ITV’s Saturday night show Blind Date; He later admitted this would result in ’20 years of taking the mickey on and off’.

She told presenter Cilla Black that she was studying social and political science, was captain of the university’s women’s football team and had a crush on American film star Matt Dillon.

Luckily for her husband-to-be, her trip to Gibraltar after choosing ‘Will from Surrey’ was a disaster; The cameras recorded her husband branding her a ‘cold fish’.

Things got worse backstage and ‘Frankie was said to have told him: ‘Fuck you, I never want to see you again.’

She was actually going to do it – ironically in a Commons bar in 2003, three years after she married Andy. Will Harris, to give his full name, was the marketing director of the Tory Party at the time. Ms. Van Heel, however, has largely stayed out of politics; but outspoken tweets attacking her husband’s political opponents last appeared in 2015, when he defended the Labor leadership.

‘Can’t we stage a military coup to get rid of our democratically elected government???’ Someone asks: It was not intended to be taken literally.

But he also branded London mayor Boris Johnson a ‘idiot’ and described the then health secretary Jeremy Hunt as looking ‘very terrible’ and ‘completely mismanaging the NHS’. More recently, in an online Q&A in 2023, he touched on the ‘Covid-multifaceted challenges experienced by young people’ and recalled how he laughed ‘in despair’ at ‘Rishi Sunak saying he was a big advocate of green policies’.

The couple, who moved north when Mr Burnham became MP for Leigh in 2001, have three children: Jimmy (now 26), Rosie (24) and Annie (21). As well as her successful career and busy family life, she also sits on the board of Plan International UK, a charity working to advance gender equality.

In 2010, Ms. Van Heel, in a rare glimpse into her personal life, revealed how she had a double mastectomy after genetic testing showed she might be at risk of breast cancer.

His sister, Claire, died aged just 39 from an aggressive form of the disease. A friend recently told The i Paper that enduring such a personal tragedy ‘dared her to avoid the attention that might surround politicians’ wives’.

By her own admission, the woman’s reaction was less than supportive when her husband announced plans to return to Westminster after nine years as mayor of Greater Manchester.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Mr Burnham said his initial reaction was ‘probably a two-word answer…probably half-joking’, adding that ‘some encouragement was needed’.

Early in their relationship, Miss Van Heel appeared on ITV’s Saturday night show Blind Date.

Ms. Van Heel’s background in marketing (she has held senior roles at companies such as MTV and Sky and was involved in logo design) has led to speculation that she was involved in the rebranding process.

The ‘Vote for us Andy’ posters displayed during the Makerfield campaign, as well as a caricature of a frowning face, were notable for not mentioning Labour.

But apart from being photographed with him at election counts and victory rallies, he has been virtually invisible in Manchester political circles over the last decade. Following Mr Burnham’s re-entry into national politics, his social media accounts were deleted and his carefully curated LinkedIn page was also removed.

Unlike his previous leadership bid, this time he showed no campaign videos and did no interviews.

At the same time, his own career is going from strength to strength. He has been with Manchester-based electric vehicle charging company Be.EV since 2022, where he is chief customer officer and owns hundreds of shares.

The role attracted attention because – as the Daily Mail revealed last month – Be.EV had a £5.4 million contract with Transport for Greater Manchester, which was responsible for delivering transport policies during Mr Burnham’s time as mayor.

He emphasized that the contract was awarded before he started working there and that Mr Burnham was not involved in the decision. He declared his position on the mayoral registry of interests and formally backed away from decisions regarding the firm.

Be.EV said that the tender was signed ‘with appropriate procurement processes’. And the Greater Manchester Combined Authority said he had ‘fulfilled his legal obligations’ as mayor.

As he prepares to enter Downing Street, the temptation for politicians to take their wives out to show a more human side of their character is something Mr Burnham has so far resisted.

It remains to be seen how long this determination will last as we face the reality of trying to turn around Labour’s dismal poll ratings.
