Cynthia Nixon named to New York court nomination panel, drawing mockery

New York State is being mocked after its highest court chief justice appointed “Sex and the City” actress Cynthia Nixon to a commission that screens and recommends candidates for the state’s top judicial positions.

Nixon, who played attorney Miranda Hobbes on the 2000s hit TV series, will be one of four members of the 12-seat Judicial Nominating Commission, who must not be licensed members of the New York State Bar to practice law in the Empire State.

He was appointed Thursday by Chief Justice Rowan Wilson.

“Only playing a lawyer in Kathy Hochul’s New York on HBO would qualify for electing justices on our state’s highest court,” Rep. Michael Lawler, R-R.Y., told Fox News Digital on Monday.

Other online critics mocked the fact that Nixon’s character is a lawyer but is not one in real life.

Someone posted a photo of “ER” actor Noah Wyle, who plays a doctor, saying he could be the next Surgeon General. “I played an astronaut in a school play when I was maybe 10 years old. Should I prepare my resume for NASA?” someone else wrote.

Challenging Republicans, state Attorney General Letitia James Saritha Komatireddy said “appointing a prominent activist with zero legal background to help shape the future of our judiciary sends completely the wrong message.”

“This is part of a broader trend in New York: politics increasingly trumping public safety and common sense,” Komatireddy said. he told the New York Post.

Nixon was aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America and ran unsuccessfully in the 2018 primary against Andrew Cuomo.

He campaigned for former Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2013 and current Mayor Zohran Mamdani in 2025.

At least one Democrat also opposed Nixon’s appointment and appeared to blame more leftist members of his party for not naming Gov. Kathy Hochul’s original candidate for Rowan’s seat.
