Perth man sentenced by Supreme Court judge for brutally attacking girlfriend in ‘deliberate’ act of violence
A Perth man who strangled his ex-girlfriend unconscious outside her home and told police she was “lucky I didn’t finish the job” has been jailed for 16 years for his heinous crime.
A High Court judge on Thursday described the brutal attack as a “deliberate and persistent act of violence” and assured the man was “determined to kill him”.
The incident took place in February 2024 but the court heard the stalking of the woman he knew began months earlier.
He sent a barrage of “extremely abusive” and “frightening” messages, with more than 230 texts and calls in just three days.
Some of these were: “You died for me” and “I would kill myself anyway, but my hatred for you keeps me alive.”
He had waited outside the woman’s apartment for eight hours the day before the attack.
At Thursday’s sentencing, the judge praised two men at the scene for their efforts to stop the attack but criticized the way the woman’s desperate call to triple-0 was handled, saying the operator provided no assistance when the woman needed it most.
Outside court on Thursday, police said the response was appropriate and timely.
The attacker, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, will be eligible for parole after 12 years.
