UK armed forces ‘ready to defend country’ following Iran warning over US bombers
Britain’s armed forces are ready to defend the country against any attack, the government said on Thursday.
This comes after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned that Britain was allowing US bombers to fly from its bases.
A government spokesman said: “Our Armed Forces stand ready to defend the UK against any attack, whether from within our own territory or from abroad. The UK is ready 24/7 to defend itself.” he said.
“This includes implementing a layered approach to air and missile defence, provided by Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force assets equipped with a range of advanced capabilities, working closely with our NATO allies,” they added.
The spokesman said Britain’s approach had not changed in response to Iran’s warning and that it was determined to defend its people, interests and allies in accordance with international law by avoiding being dragged into a wider conflict.
Iran’s warning comes after Britain’s new Prime Minister Andy Burnham was informed last week that Britain had recommitted to an existing agreement allowing the United States to use British bases in what the United States describes as the region’s collective self-defense.
