Criminal cases against people’s representatives in Kerala: five face sexual harassment charges, IUML leader faces 120 BUDS Act cases

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader and former legislator MC Kamaruddin, who has around 120 cases against him, tops the list of public representatives facing criminal cases in Kerala.

Mr. Kamaruddin was one of the accused in the Moda Gold Jewelery investment scam of 2019. He was arrested by invoking the provisions of the Prohibition of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act, 2019 (BUDS Act). Mr. Kamaruddin was responsible for most of the 163 BUDS cases filed against people’s representatives.

Representatives of five people (Kovalam MLA M. Vincent, former Kazhakuttam MLA MA Vaheed, Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi, former Parassala MLA AT George and Kunnathunadu MLA Vice President Sajeendran) are reportedly facing sexual harassment charges.

Former Koothuparamba MLA P. Jayarajan and former Kalliassery MLA TV Rajesh have murder charges against them.

Details of ongoing cases against sitting or former MPs and MLAs emerged following a recent report submitted by the District Court to the Kerala High Court.

Most of the BUDS Act cases were registered in Kannur and Kasaragod. More than 130 cases of offenses under cheating and fraud, mostly in connection with the BUDS Act, were reported by the District Court.

The report was submitted to the Supreme Court through a suo motu petition initiated under the directions of the Supreme Court to monitor ongoing cases against current/former MPs and MLAs.

Of the 555 cases reported as of June 30, 2026, some 260 were recorded as crimes disturbing public peace, often in connection with widespread protests, marches and other public demonstrations by political parties.

Thiruvananthapuram had the highest number of pending cases (180) against MPs/MLAs, followed by Kasaragod (133) and Kannur (50).

The Kerala High Court was informed that the details of the pending cases were shared with the State Police Chief, who was directed to be careful while reporting the pending cases. Additionally, the Deputy Chief of Police was instructed to prepare a comprehensive report after reviewing the data provided by the Regional Courthouse.
