India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu claimed her first gold medal for the country at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 by winning the women’s 48kg title on Sunday. The victory was Chanu’s third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, having topped the podium in 2018 and 2022. The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist previously won silver at the 2014 Games. Chanu also rewrote the record books, re-breaking the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records with a best lift of 85kg in the snatch and then lifting a games record of 105kg in the clean and jerk for a total win of 190kg. He previously opened with an unsuccessful attempt at 82kg before successfully lifting the weight on his second lift. Chanu then lifted 85 kg in her final attempt to set the new record in the snatch. The gold medal adds to Chanu’s outstanding Commonwealth Games record, having previously won titles at the 2018 Gold Coast and 2022 Birmingham Games.
