Social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate will remain in jail for at least two more weeks until their next hearing as they fight extradition to the United Kingdom, where the brothers are charged with rape and sex trafficking, a federal judge said Monday.
U.S. judge Lauren Louis has scheduled a detention hearing for Aug. 13 to determine whether Tates should remain in jail or be released pending an extradition process that could take months.
The brothers did not or were required to appear in court on Monday and have remained in jail since making a brief court appearance two days after their July 18 arrest.
The Tates family have become among the world’s most polarizing internet personalities, promoting wealth, male domination and misogyny through their social media empire. The new allegations are the latest in a long-running international legal saga involving the US, UK and Romania involving the Tates. The brothers have repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
The brothers’ lawyers said Monday that they want the U.S. government to turn over documents that British authorities submitted to ensure their arrest.
“They have nothing but criminal charges,” attorney Joseph McBride said after the hearing. “It’s their word against ours right now.”
US lawyer Alejandra Lopez told the court that Britain must hand over all its materials to the foreign ministry by mid-September.
The brothers have long claimed their violent and misogynistic remarks were taken out of context or meant in jest.
Another of the lawyers, Jackie Perczek, said the Tates showed they were not a flight risk by returning to Romania every month after being accused of inciting women to sexually abuse them.
“They haven’t escaped for three years,” he said. “They have traveled the world and return to Romania every month.”
The former professional kickboxers, who hold dual US and UK citizenship, have millions of social media followers and are strong supporters of Donald Trump. The White House said the brothers should not expect any help from the president.
“They never did anything wrong. They should not be extradited for crimes they did not commit,” McBride said shortly after the Tates’ arrest.
McBride said the extradition attempt was politically motivated but did not provide details.
Prosecutors in England said the new charges relate to four new accusers and were brought after authorities received evidence from Bedfordshire police in southeast England. The allegations, which date from 2010 to 2017, include crimes related to rape, assault, human trafficking and “indecent images of a child and extreme pornography”.
The brothers are currently charged with rape, bodily harm, human trafficking and controlling gainful prostitution in relation to three other accusers in the UK between 2012 and 2015.
The brothers moved to Romania in 2016 and were arrested there in 2022, accused of participating in schemes that encouraged women to sexually abuse. They denied these allegations, and the Romanian case did not proceed due to legal and procedural issues.
Andrew Tate, 39, rose to prominence a decade ago as a contestant on the UK reality television show Big Brother. He was fired from the show after a video emerged showing him attacking a woman.
He reached over 10 million followers on X but was banned from other platforms, including YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, for violating hate speech rules. He made widely condemned comments, such as saying women who are sexually assaulted should take some responsibility for the attacks and sharing graphic descriptions of how he might attack women.
